A Playbook for Driving Transformation at Scale
When I played football at Indiana University and later for the Chicago Bears, each player was given a detailed playbook at the start of training camp. These playbooks were well over 100 pages long and were kept in a heavy binder. These were our ground rules. Our guides. Our Bibles. They included everything from a descriptive list of defensive or offensive plays depending on which side of the ball you were on, to detailed statistics, team goals and objectives, and cultural guidelines. We carried these playbooks with us wherever we went.
A playbook in sports is much more than just sketches and diagrams of the coach's designed plays. Instead, it tells the entire story of how a team builds a scheme or plan from the ground up by utilizing a âtogetherâ strategy involving all units and players.
Don't forget: When it comes to launching and implementing culture, we as leaders need our own playbook.
Now that we've identified the common challenges of launching and implementing a culture change, it's time to focus our efforts on driving transformation at scale.
The early stages of launching and introducing a culture shift or change to the rest of a company are critical because if there is a lack of traction from the start, gaining momentum and recovering from that point forward will be extremely difficult.
After nearly a year and a half of hard work with Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits of Illinois (SGWSâIL), we were finally ready to launch the culture. What was unique about arriving at this point in introducing the culture to the rest of the company was seeing the progress that had already been made. Even from just communicating the âGet Better Today ⦠Togetherâ cultural purpose statement and watching the different approaches in how team members were communicating with one another was special to witness.
Change didn't happen overnight. It required arduous effort, which was initially met with aggressive opposition, so the change took root gradually. Finally, other division leaders began to see a glimmer of hope that their hard work was paying off, even if only in a small way. Encouraged, the desire to take it to the next level grew.
Because our world is continuously evolving, there is always a higher level to go. One more step. Even though a great deal of effort and planning goes into communicating and launching the culture, the process does not end there. It's tempting to believe that once the culture has been shared and communicated with the organization, we can relax and take our foot off the pedal. It is critical to establish the precedent during every meeting that there is more work to be done to improve and get better. Always.
If you want to successfully implement and drive culture change at scale, you must shock the organization. When I tell you to shock the organization, I am not referring to negative connotations. Simply put, you must convey a moving and compelling message that sends shockwaves throughout the company. There must be vigor and enthusiasm in the delivery.
